Got an itch in the britches for a cajun/zydeco accordion and figured this would be the place to ask. Have been listening to Zachary Richard and decided to give it a go and try to play some tunes. Have background in traditional piano style accordions from when I was a kid, still have one somewhere I think, still play various keyboards on and off. Question is, am looking for an entry level accordion to play Zachary style tunes. Don't know what type of accordion I should get as a first one. Have heard he plays on a diatonic "cajun" accordion, but would I be looking 1 row in C or maybe a 3 row in GCF? Am I on track? Have come across the cheap ones on Ebay Morellis but hear they are not all that (What do you expect for $135). Have heard mention of the Hohner Panther Diatonic Accordion. Would that be a good beginner one and should I be looking for one in the GCF mode? Am looking for something in the $300 price range, can I get something that is worthwhile? It's a first one, if I get into it further will expand Am just in the process of figuring out what is what in this world I'm revisiting after 25 years absense. Any suggestions and input is greatly appreciated, zig

Posts: 77 (08/29/08 15:09:29) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hi Ziggy- Unfortunately, 1 row cajun boxes (what Zack plays) are wicked expensive (you'd be lucky to find one these days for $1000). And a Chinese version (Hohner Ariette, iolite, etc) is fun to learn on but if you are a PA player they will not last you very long... and if you pull too hard you will break things and go out of tune. My advice is to try and get one for like $150. or less, used... while looking for other boxes. Another issue... as a PA player myself I found the 1 row extremely limiting/// it all seemed about knowing what notes you didn't have. I really don't see why you couldn't just go to a a 2 or 3 row... they are exactly the same as a one row but with a few extra accidentals and multiple rows a fifth apart. I have a really nice vintage Hohner Club IIB I would sell you for $300 that should provide you with everything you need to get up to speed, and give you professional intonation and structural integrity as well. For just maybe $100 more you can get a Hohner Panther 3-row. I like them! Nothing fancy there, though, and I would worry a little if you live somewhere really hot or really cold (it is thin ABS like plastic whereas a Club or Corona is plastic laminate on WOOD). If you can scare up maybe $600 you should be able to get a Hohner Corona or a Weltmeister 509 in good condition... either of which could last a lifetime. I have a Weltmeister GCF 3-row I would sell for $750... and it is like new... NEVER GIGGED... (they now retail at ABOUT $1500). MAINLY, YOU NEED TO GET SOMETHING AND START "PULLIN" BECAUSE IT TAKES QUITE A WHILE UNTIL THE DIATONIC THING STARTS TO MAKE SENSE. LOTS OF PLAYING ALONG WITH CD'S... SO GET SOMETHING THAT STAYS IN TUNE, AND THE MORE ROWS THE MORE KEYS YOU CAN LEARN. One word of caution... accordians are finicky, and if something goes wrong VERY EXPENSIVE to repair!!! If you get a cheap 1-row you will have to fix anything that breaks yourself, so I recommend that for your first accordian you buy one from someone you know or trust, that knows that what they are selling you is good for the long haul. Beware of ebay bargains... the reason you get a bargain is that everyone else has already been burned by the seller's false praise of his accordians. Don't get stuck putting $300 into a $200 accordian to make it worth the $200 you paid for it. Though am interested in the Cub IIB, I think may try the panther for a starter. Looking at the IIB, I'm betting its guts are a bit more solid and German made than the China Panther, but may think the 3 row may be more flexible. Looking at pictures of Zack, see the 1 rows. If I get into it, may look into them, but like you said, need to start pullin first. I'm a bit anal once I get into something and have no doubt may hit you up on an accordion or 2 if you sell them, I enjoy quality builds. The link you posted goes to a 404 error?
